LSU to be Well Represented at SEATA Student Symposium

Coming up in early February the Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Association (SEATA) will host their 26th Annual Student Symposium. At the Symposium, the SEATA committees invite all undergraduate Athletic Training Students within its District to submit case studies for presentation. Of the submissions, 25 authored case studies provide a 15 minute summary of the case in a moderated poster presentation session. Of the 25, 15 were pre-selected to provide an oral presentation of their case studies. Traditionally, LSU is well represented within these sessions, and this year is no different. From the 25 prestigiously selected case studies, 9 will be from Louisiana State University.

The LSU Athletic Training Students which were chosen to give an oral and poster presentation to 750+ attendees were:
  • Camille Bordelon: Traumatic Brain Injury In a Collegiate Football Player

  • Courtney Melanson: Tibiofemoral Dislocation in a High School Football Player

The LSU Athletic Training Students which were chosen for the poster presentation sessions were:

  • Kirsten Hundertmark: Chronic Leg Pain in a Collegiate Women's Soccer Player

  • Madeleine Scaramuzzo: Phantom Pain in a Collegiate Football Player

  • Raymond Champagne: Chronic Knee Pain in a Collegiate Women's Basketball Player

  • Nicholas Badeaux: Upper Respiratory Muscle Spasms in a Collegiate Swimmer

  • Jared Muth: Acute Knee Trauma in a DI Collegiate Basketball Player

  • Zac Benjamin: Traumatic Forearm Injury in a Collegiate Men's Track and Field Athlete

  • Emily Mesa: Nineteen Yr Old Collegiate Tennis Player with Chronic Migraines
Once the presentations are given, they will be scored and ranked in order to receive honors such as top Clinical Case Study Abstracts, Clinical Case Study Oral Presentations, and Clinical Case Study Poster Presentations, as well as overall Clinical Case Study (abstract + oral presentation + poster presentation). The LSU Athletic Training Staff would like to congratulate these students on their accomplishments and wish them good luck as they prepare for their presentations.

LSU Athletic Trainers Join Habitat for Humanity

On Saturday January 29th, some of the LSU Athletic Training Staff, GAs, and Students got together for a day of community service, working with the local Habitat for Humanity Project. The Staff, GAs, and Students that attended were assigned to painting the outside of two houses in a local Baton Rouge neighborhood. Everyone at the project, including Habitat for Humanity Staff and Volunteers from around the area split into two groups, each responsible for painting the siding of the two houses. The Athletic Training Staff had a great time volunteering, and helping out our community. Our group is looking forward to participating in Habitat for Humanity again in the near future.

LSU Football Athletic Training Staff Travel to the Cotton Bowl

Recently the LSU Football Athletic Training Staff got the opportunity to travel to Dallas, Texas for the 2011 AT&T Cotton Bowl. While hard work and preparation for the big game was a top priority, the staff was also able to enjoy the events and have fun together. The week-long trip began with a Welcoming Party in Cowboy Stadium. Both LSU and Texas A&M were present for a celebration with a video, food, and fun. The next night the team and staff traveled to the Main Event for a laser tag/bowling/arcade/billiards extravaganza. This was followed up the next day with a Cotton Bowl tradition of the Lawry's Beef Bowl, an all-you-can eat steak dinner. The football staff was also included in the festivities of an autograph session pizza party at the Hilton Anatole Hotel, which provided top notch hospitality for the week, including access to stretch limo's! One night some students were able to go ice skating, too. After a week of fun, it was time to play the game. This was a great end to the week - a victory over the Aggies. It was great seeing LSU on the world's largest HD screen!

LSU Athletic Training Student of the Month

Congratulations to Danielle Davis! Danielle was voted on by the LSU Athletic Training Staff and Certified Graduate Assistants to be the Athletic Training Student of the Month for exemplifying great work ethic and willingness to help others in the Athletic Training Rooms. Danielle is in her 3rd and final year in the LSU Athletic Training Education Program. She has worked with the Women’s Basketball and Football programs and is now assisting with Softball. She is always willing to help others and do additional work besides her required duties. When asked about Danielle, Ana Gross, MS, ATC, Staff Athletic Trainer for Softball says, "Danielle has been a tremendous asset to myself and the Softball team this year. She has proved to be an excellent mentor to our 1st year Athletic Training Student. Danielle also has a huge hand in helping out with our current injury rehabilitations including ACL Reconstruction, Ulnar Nerve Transposition, and a Chronic Ankle Injury. She has displayed exceptional work ethic and determination to perfect her craft of Athletic Training. I have nothing but high hopes for her as she continues her education next year as a Graduate Assistant". We wish Danielle the best of luck in her future endeavors!
